A-Train
The game's annual income tax rate is 50 percent, but property tax is a
mere 5 percent. So before April 1 assessment day, spend your cash on buildings.
Those cash outlays count as expenses against your income, letting you report
tax-free negative income even while generating revenue from the property.

I played this game back in 93' and this remain my all time favorite. ATrain is like Simcity mixed with railroad tycoon. In the game, you are the owner of a railroad monopoly your goal is to develop proper transportation to make the city prosper so you get more $$$ (500M?). In the game, you can build railroads/stations, build factory to create jobs, and build apparments/develop land to attract moroe resident, and borrow money from bank, invest on stock market and you also have to pay tax. Alghough you can make lots of $$$ by investing in real estate, you make most of your money by building a successful railroad (because it provide steady income stream
Compare to other similar games, ATRAIN's attention to detail is amazing. For example, there is stock market in the game, and its behavior reflects the economy of your city (eg, if your city is rapidly growing, then the price of the constructing company rises; on the other hand, when the stock market busts, then there are less people riding on your train). Realistic setup and little details like this made ATrain a very playable game.
*SPOILER* hint: you accelerate the growth rate of the city by following the following step: 1. building railroad (and station) from an established area to an open area. (eg, near the main railway that exist in the beginning of the game) 2. buy some land (5-10 squares) near new station to stock construction material. 3. stock material by frieght train. 4. *important step* buy and then resell land around the new station. 5. put passenger train into service. the land that you buy become flat, and once it is resold, the computer will build resident on them if there are 1. passenger train to the new area and 2. there are building materials available.
I believe this is a real classic and if you like building things (instead of shooting and destroying things) then this is a game you shouldn't miss. There is one knock against this game thou: my copy of ATrain doesn't run on my win98 too well (no sound and some times crashes). But regardless, I think it is well worth taking a look at.
A-Train is to Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon what chess is to checkers. Where the original Railroad Tycoon gave you an elegantly simple game of railroad resource management centering primarliy on track laying, station building and train scheduling with just a pinch of stock market manipulation, A-Train, a Japanese import and descendant of the game Railroad Empire, provides a full immersion experience with real estate speculation, land development and stock market portfolio management in much greater detail. While the game is certainly not as easy to jump in to as Sid Meier's opus, it is, if anything, even more satisfying and addictive than Microproses's Railroad Tycoon. The original game includes six scenarios of increasing complexity and you can expect to spend many hours developing your optimum strategy for each challenge. If, like me, you find yourself hooked after conquering those six challenges, then go out and find the A-Train Construction Set. Maxis, which marketed A-Train east of the Pacific, released the constructor set about one year after the original game. It allows you to build your own scenarios, paint your own terrain and tweak them to your hearts content. This is truly one of those all or nothing games. If you like detailed and demanding business simulations and are a train buff, this game will put you in hog heaven. If you're more a finger twitching alien blaster, or just a checkers kind of guy, stay far, far away.
Ah... just another Railroad-Tycoon-clone - seen that a hundred times before. Ha! So you might think at first sight. Then you start playing it like Railroad Tycoon and the game laughs into your face - you just don't get anywhere! You know what? This is a hard business-sim, you need to care about the stock-market, real estate and all of those dumb dumb things. You scratch your head now looking at the rating above and compare it to the things I wrote? Maybe you already want to stop reading and go searching for a more enjoyable game - STOP! You come to the right place here. I have never seen a game that combines the hard sides of a realistic business-sim with the enjoyable sides of seeing your business as well as the surrounding area grow. The game got a nice touch of Sim City, but you need to work for it - no automatic switches! This isn't Railroad Tycoon where you lay the track and the trains search their way through. It's hard to describe the fascination of A-Train. This game comes slowly, it demands something from the gamer, but it gives back a lot. The atmosphere is much better as in - sorry, I need to compare again - Railroad Tycoon. It's more realistic than Sim City. It's simply a serious, addicting and enjoying game that would have deserved more attention than it got.
A-Train was one of my very favorite games growing up. I remember starting out with Tapper and Alleycat running from 5 and a half inch disks; so that is saying something.
The game concept is simple one: Build yourself an empire with trains as its arteries and core. The program focuses as much on building yourself a city as building a train system. Starting out your greatest asset in the game is trains. You build track, lay down stations, and place trains. From that everything else follows. A busy station attracts homes. People want shops, entertainment, etc. These things naturally spring up and can be bought. Position things right and see land values skyrocket near your rails (I hope you bought that land!)
In short A-train is for the Railroad Tycoon enthusiast, or the Simcity veteran. The gameplay has its own unique flavor, but is related to the same kind of thrill. There is nothing quite like seeing a city blossom from well placed transportation. If you can stand ancient graphics and sound, this game was one of the best.

This game was a fun and enjoyable experience for me.
Graphics- The graphics were pretty good for it's time they may not be the best to look at but who cares when it's all about the gameplay which i will be talking about next.
Gameplay- This game had amazing gameplay it has the same interface as the SimCity games so if you are into those this shouldn't be too hard to learn and if you aren't you will pick it up real fast so don't worry.
Sound- This is my only gripe with the game it wasn't to friendly to listen to with the periods that i play in between with but you also have the option of turning the volume off so don't worry.
Conclusion- If you are into strategy make your own world games like SimCity i suggest getting this it was fun and it doesn't wear out it's welcome too fast.
