Nighthawk: F117-A Stealth Fighter 2.0 Reviews
As a flight sim fundi I am probably not the best person to review these types of games, I am biased.
Nighthawk F117-A is a wonderful game, from the wicked intro video through to the credits.
The style is simple, and the gameplay is easy enough to understand.
You 'log on' as a pilot name, and it keeps track of a career mode for you. Unfortnately every time you crash or get shot down and captured you have to make a new player. But the medals and awards as well as rank it gives you can be quite rewarding. It also keeps track of your kills for you.
The missions are area specific, if you choose to fly in the Gulf, you have to photograph Saddam Husein's palace, you have to bomb WOMD sites and hunt Scud launchers. The areas are Gulf, Europe, Vietnam/Korea and the Carribean.
The level of opposition is based on the area you choose, as well as the level of play. The level of play can be further enhanced by selecting Open War, where everything is a target, Limited engagements, where you can shoot at anything that detects and engages you, but collateral damage must be limited, and Cold War. Cold War are basically 'Black Ops' where you are technically at peace, but have to do recon missions, or assasinate a country leader or such. The idea is not to be detected by anything. You loose points every time a radar detects you, a person visually identifies you or you blow something besides the target up.
The F117 is also selectable in 'real life' or Microsoft mode. In Real life you only have 2 weapons bay, and not internal gun. This SERIOUSLY limits your 'shoot everything that moves' ability. You have to use stealth and cunning to get to your target. 'Microsoft F117' has 4 weapons bays and an internal 20mm cannon.
The weapons in the game consist of almost every weapon in the US Armed Forces inventory. You have 500lbs M82 dumb bomb, Laser Guided bombs, Maverick missiles, Fuel Air Explosive bombs, Cluster bombs, Harpoon missiles, Penguin missiles, AMRAAM's, Aim-9 Sidewinders, extra fuel tanks, recon cameras, you name it, they have it. Even weapons the IRL F117 isn't cleard to carry.
The more restrictions you place on yourself, the higher your score. But it all adds up to massive fun.
The only bad side is the STUPIDLY loud and high pitched engine noise. The rest are fairly good and enjoyable. But you can turn the engine sound off.
The post mission debrief shows you exactly where you flew and what you did.
The game is easy to play, fun to do (with careful stores management you can do the equivalent of shooting down an entire airforce - GRIN) and quite well done. Again, its 12 years old. Don't expect miricals in the graphics department.

I played this game many years ago when it first came out. I loved it then, and the years have done little to dampen my enthusiam. Obviously the graphics and sound are a little dated, but the gameplay is still fantastic.
The beginning menus to get into the game and start flying are very simple, and even a novice user will be able to get the hang of it very quickly.
Flying is another matter. Unlike most flight sims, you can't cruise around at 20,000 feet and get away with it. If you want to master the game, flying at 500 feet is a start, and I tend to fly at about 200 feet.
Stealth is the name of the game here, and simply flying in, destroying things and flying out won't work - you'll get shot down!
On the hardest difficulty setting, staying alive is EXTREMELY difficult - especially if you are flying in the Cold War and you must not get detected!
I would say that there tends to be a bit of tedious flying at the beginning of the mission, but once you get into the thick of things it's fine. Going back is always quite interesting as the enemy tries to catch you - especially if you run out of fuel! Trying to glide the plane with 20 km to the runway and no fuel is... interesting!
In conclusion, whilst there are several minor flaws, this is a great game, and pretty easy to pick up once you get used to it. A classic.
