Pirates! Gold for Windows Reviews

As gameplay is basically the same to the original version of 'Pirates!' I won´t get into detail about that. Have a look at the review of 'Pirates' instead.
So, what has changed since then?
The most obvious differences are of course big improvements in graphics and sound. The game's looking quite nice now and some good music has been added, too. The coastlines are more detailed in the Gold version so finding treasures or family members with just one part of the map (that was no problem in the original) will require a lot of cruising around in the Caribbean.
There are also more cities you can sail to or attack but mostly they are quite small outposts. Cities are graphically represented now and you have to click on buildings to get to the respective locations. Besides the governor, tavern and merchant there are two new places. The shipwright now takes care of your damaged ships and you can sell them and cannons there. To divide plunder you have to visit the bank.
Copy protection has changed, too, but unfortunately for the worse. After leaving the city and sailing around for some time you will encounter a pirate whose flag you have to identify. Even when you're right it's possible that you're attacked by him which can be quite fatal in the early stages.
You can control your ships with the mouse. Pressing the left button will steer them to the left and the right button will swing them right. You can raise and lower your sails not only in combat but also when travelling between cities. This is useful when steering through shallows.

Well, that are basically all changes that have been made. Not a new game but some well made improvements. If you liked 'Pirates!', you´ll love this one.

I played this game a long time ago, and it's a real improvement from the other games in the Pirates series. Not just because of the improved graphics (though that's a big plus) but also you can ACTUALLY MAKE A LIVING on trading. Actually, it's a very viable--though very boring--way to get money. It's well worth the credits...I ended up reinstalling this game about three times before I finally used the CD as a coaster.

My humble tips include NOT playing as the Spanish if you want to be a pirate, and choosing the 'Medicine' option for your special skill; after all, a longer career means more money all around! Also, save before you speak to any friendly governors, in case thay ask you favors. That way, you can take them up on it and still have a graceful way out if the job forces you halfway across the Carribean. Oh, and don't marry too early. It's simple to tell when you've gained the appropriate stature to get married; when you make conversation with a girl, be it the merchant's daughter or the governors, they agree to be your informant. Marrying a governor's daughter or niece is preferred if you're a pirate, and still a strong argument if you're a merchant. Note that if your father-in-law is a merchant, he'll give you a cut rate on goods. If you're trading, that's all you need to make a killing.

Final two notes, I promise: no matter if you're a pirate or trader, always liquidate your cargo before splitting the money at the bank. As you gain fame, this could take four or five stops. And watch out for the copy protection--you'll know if you blew it because when you enter a fight with a pirate or hunter, your cannon will mysteriously disappear after misidentifying your adversary. After that first time, the game will tell you who a pirate is. Write it down or something.

Pirates just kept getting better. I owned the very first pirates game that was two 5 1/4 disks (remember them?) back when my first computer only had two 5 1/4 drives. The original game was CGA graphics but they got the most from those colors compared to other CGA games. As they evolved the graphics got a lot better but the gameplay didn't change too much. You still have to balance fighting, plundering, trading, finding treasure, finding lost relatives, doing favors, getting married, obtaining status and reputation, obtaining wealth, ending voyages and starting new ones, and finally; retiring. Your rank in the game depends on everything I've previously mentioned. This game allows you start out as one of four nationalities and in different pirate era's. Each era has it's on share of problems for each nationality such as: number of ports available, economy, and nationality strength and / or weakness. This game also allows you to configure one of four difficulty modes which controls every aspect of the game from weather, sailing, fighting, reputations, and ease of missions. You have to balance your nationality with the other four to obtain status and friendship along with doing battles with them. Everything you do in this game leads to your reputation and it is your reputation which affects you the most in this game. The fiercest reputation will end your battles earlier and keep your men more loyal but you have a harder time entering ports and trading with them. A weaker reputation will help you in the ports and with favors but you will need to have shorter voyages to keep the men from mutiny. There is just so much playability with this game that I have never gotten tired of playing it. I've played every pirate game that I can find and this is by far the best of the lot.

This is a great gem of a game, if you are like me a fan of naval war games. In this game you get to play two different ways either as a new pirate at the start new game option or a establish pirate at the choose from a campaing option. Anyway each of this will have a list of senarios for you to choose from. In the start new game, you get to play as a pirate of either one of the four naval power of that time, England, Spain, Holland, or French. You get to choose you special skill later such as wit and charm, fencing, gunnery or navigation. The next thing is you get to choose your difficulty level. As for the special campaing you dont get to choose your country as it is already set for you. In this game you will get to attack any of the country you choose, but I do advice you not to attack all the four country at once. You can also gain favour, land and title from a country by helping a country with missions and attacking the enemy of that country. In this game you can get married to one of the many fine ladies. I love the part of the game when the fighting starts, you can either attack the enemy ships with your cannons or you can board the ship and fence with them. In this game you get to attack ports with your ship which is a cool thing. This is really a great game that all you naval battle or pirate fans must get.

Prates Gold is one of the more famous games from the good old days. It’s a pirategame, which takes place in the I the period, where the power over the Carribean, changed more often than the wind, between the four superpowers: The militant and conquest-horny Spain, the cooperating and diplomatic France, the trading and seafaring Netherlands and at last the Navy-strong and very dominating England.

You can play Pirates in several ways. You can e.g. command an old expedition, to see if you can do better than the historic person, who’s role you are playing. This is a very good way, to get the feel of the game, and understand the many aspects of the game. Other than that, you can also faster attack the big rich Spanish harbours. So this is a way good and fast way of starting your Pirates experience.
You can also choose to make your own career. This means that you will start from the bottom and work your way up. You have to get your own crew, more ships, provisions and glory. You will have to fight many a small-ship captain, before you can board the big ships, enter the big battles, and unfortunately get the big bucks.

There are two ways to invade a city. You can sail into the harbour and try to get close enough to attack, without being shot to pieces by the fort cannons, OR you can choose to walk in to town. There are pros and cons to both ways. I will let you find out yourself what I mean.

There is a copy-security in the beginning of the game. The first ship you will meet is a pirate. You have to name the pirate-captain, from the flag he is flying. This is pure guesswork, since the flags only appear in the manual. If you guess wrong (and you will) you will have to fight him, without cannons, though only for this battle, and your chances of surviving getting boarded drops drastically. Just assume that you guessed wrong, and FLEE….FAST!!!

The game is controlled through mouse and keyboard. You can control your ship entirely by using the mousebuttons, so your hands doesn’t move much in this game. You fire the cannons on the SPACEBAR, so these are the only things you will need.
The game goes incredibly fast in the battle scenes, and I will advice you to use TURBO, and set the speed at about 10-20%.

The ressourcepart of the game is built up, around crewmembers and gold. Without crewmembers no looting, and without looting no gold, and without gold no crewmembers. Try to keep spirits high among your crew, so you don’t have to fight mutiny or realize that all your crewmembers have abandoned ship.

It can be hard to get the hang of Pirates, but give yourself the pleasure of using some time on it. It is a great game and the grades I gave it probably says it all, and that’s apart from the fact that it is no. one on the hitlist on the frontpage.

It is a unique game that have given me many hours in front of my screen.

Pirates!
Prvo posjetite guvernera i poprièajte s njim.

Igra nudi mnogo toga. Možete napredovati, oženiti se, postati plemiæ, pronaæi izgubljenu sestru... Vaš kraj ovisi o tome koliko ste postigli tijekom svoje karijere.

You are a pirate. The object of this game is to retire with high social standing, having amassed a large fortune. To acquire wealth, you sack towns and other ships, and search for buried treasure. To acquire social standing, you play the game of politics with the governments in the game (England, France, Holland, and Spain). This might involve getting married to a governor's daughter, doing missions for the government, and attacking that government's enemies.
The game plays almost like Pirates. The four skill levels and four and six historical time periods still exist, giving the game a varied feel. Even at the same skill level and time period, enough random events happen to make it feel different. Sword combat is still the same: a button press, a delay, and then a swing happens. This is a very slow, almost choreographed combat feel. Ship-to-ship combat and ship-to-fort combat is still set up so whoever has the wind and the guns has the advantage. The game interface, when not doing any combat specific activity, is simple: move your cursor over an item and highlight it.
SVGA graphics really improve this game over the original. Excellent colours in a watercolour sort of way. Though they dont seem to really go the extra distance they could have done over the original.
What I like about this game is that the music and sound are very good. They give the game a real 'pirate feel.' The music does not interfere with the sound effects but actually enhances it.

Well, this game, is awesome. This is an old school game... I remember playing the original pirates and this has improved on it quite a bit. If you liked the first game the graphics in itself, make it worth getting the game. The graphics are much more smooth and almost look true game like. I will say that the graphics aren't as good as what they could have been.
The storyline is still the same good story. You start out the Mutineer on a boat and get the boat, then sail around getting gold, completing missions, seducing over bar maids, winning over the governors daughters, and everything else that comes with being a pirate.
The game play is good you have good controls, sometimes it seems like the battles are all set against you, but isn't that how it is with every game? And this version actually has a way to see if you own the game built into it. It will everyonce in a while throw a pirates flag at you and you hvae to know who it is to not have them attack. However, even if you are right it doesn't mean that you have escaped the opposing pirate. This can be very oppressing in the beginning when you are just starting out.
Overall, the game is a 'classic'. And with all classics, I would like them to come out with a newer version. Wouldn't have to do much, better graphics, more controlling gameplay, better women??, and maybe a network option? Online gameplay would be awesome!! Wouldn't it?

What is it about a game that sets it apart from all others? Is it spectacular gameplay, stunning graphics, or absolutely kickass sound? It is rare that a game is released that can combine all three. It is even more rare that a game can capture your attention as a kid and still evoke strong desire 15 years later.

Pirates! was the original game that hooked me on PC gaming. I vividly remember loading it off of my 5 1/4' floppies and being floored at the quality. 15 years later, I have seen better graphics and heard bette sound, but I still have not found a game that is as addictive as my original Pirate game.

The problem with loving the game that much is that it became very hard to justify keeping an OLD computer around to play it on. Over time, I had to upgrade my computer to the point where I almost can't play it any more. All that changed when I found an amazing deal: $10 for a 386. Ten dollars and a chance to play Pirates! again. Alas, my original disks didn't survive the time or the number of moves I put them through.

How stoked was I when I found a chance to re-sharpen my skills on Windows 3.11 as well as my ability to wield a cutlass? Words can't describe it. My hope is that Priates! Gold for Windows can make me feel like that kid who would blow off homework and sports and even girls for one more chance to rule the Caribbean.

I had played the original ages ago, and now write interactive fiction games. I am working on a game now having to do with pirates and this game is great inspiration and motivation for getting things done and getting into the right frame of mind to do so.

What makes this game so great is the challenges of the different era's, and the ability to choose your destiny by means of missions for the governors, capturing other pirates, and you just might get your way with the barmaid!

Overall, the game is highly entertaining and if you play your cards right you will retire a very wealthy man.

On the negative side, the sounds for ship spotting can get really annoying after you are playing for a bit. The taver characters could use with a bit more conversation, perhaps even some smutty pirate stories and tales of their own adventures. Something to fill in the long times at sea would be a nice addition, such as the activities that pirates used to the time and entertain themselves.
