Hey all, Sharp here...well don't let this game's
complicated look turn you away from it. It's a great game,
with a ton of nice graphics and lots of control. However,
it's a little hard to learn how to play. So, I decided to
write a quick documentation on how the game works and what
to do in it to 'Win'. First of, upon installing, select
Adlib (if you have a soundblaster) as your Music sound
source, and Soundblaster as your Digitized sound source.
This may be a little strange, but TRUST me, the game will
lock up a lot if you use Soundblaster music, and besides the
adlib sound track SOUNDS BETTER! If you have already
installed the game, I suggest going back in the INSTALL.EXE
program and making the above changes. After you're in the
game, first you'll want to select a level of play. If it's
your first time playing, I suggest Investor. The area you
play in is VERY important to the difficulty of the game.
This is a list of how each area compares to difficulty...
Europe - Easy, large cities plenty of room
to build.
North America - Average, nice size cities, lots of
industry.
Western Us - Not Bad, cities are growing.
Eastern Us - Hard, the towns are tiny and it's
pretty tough to make money.
Africa - VERY Hard, the VILLAGES are spread
out and it's almost impossible to
survive.
South Africa - ARGH! This is impossible for a
first time player, but it's good
practice for the later levels.
I strongly suggest Europe for new players. Alrighty, now
you're in the game...first things first...those orangy blobs
of color you see all over your map are cities. Find two
blobs that are fairly large in size and close together.
Then move your mouse to the pull down menus above and select
DETAILED VIEW...then click on the area of the two blobs.
You now want to connect track between the two cities (blobs)
you've chosen. To build track, hold SHIFT + THE DIRECTION
you want to build. After you've laid your track, you should
build a station at either end of it...click on the build
menu above. Then select BUILD STATION. There're several
different types of stations to choose from. I suggest
building a Terminal in every CITY you connect to. However,
later in the game when you connect to oil wells or iron
mines, use stations or depots. Signal towers are used to
help speed up trains if two or more of them are running on
the same track...in other words, NEVER BUILD A SIGNAL TOWER
until you have two trains or more. Now that you have
established two stations in two cities, select BUILD, and
the BUILD TRAIN... you'll want to select the most expensive
and fastest train for your first two stations. Now, you
should see a cute animation screen as the train rolls onto
the tracks and stops infront of you. At the time, select
the cars you want the train to carry. If you are not sure
which ones you want to carry, simply hit enter. Ok now you
see a train roster with your new train on it. You see the
two city names down below, at the bottom left hand corner of
your screen...yeah...right there. Ok well next to them, you
see a list that says CARS and then under that it should say,
NO CHANGES. Well, you can click on NO CHANGES to select the
cars the train should pick up at that city. After you have
created you're first train, you may want to look around for
other cities to connect to in the future. You may want to
visit the stock market and try your luck, click on CALL
BROKER on one of the pull down menus. You might say, HEY my
trains are moving hella slow! Well, since the game is high
res, it's gonna go sorta sluggishly, but if you click on
LOCAL VIEW in the pull down menus the trains go A LOT faster
and the game begins to get fun. Now you're basically set,
your main goals now are to connect to more cities and
industies and try to make as much money as possible. I
suggest buying some of your competitors stock, it usually
goes up, and you can make quite a bit of money. The game
doesn't tell you this, but you start off with a $500,000
loan from the bank. You should re-pay this within 10-15
years of the game. To repay the debt, go to CALL BROKER and
on the left side it should say BONDS...select that and the
select RE-PAY $500,000 bond. That should do it. If you
need more loans, you can select SELL $500,000 bond.
Careful, debt builds up pretty quickly. The Stockmarket in
this game is pretty useful, you can buy out other Rail Road
companies by purchasing over %50 percent of their stock.
Treasury stock is how much stock you own in yourself, you
should acquire some of your own stock, unless you don't
trust your own company. I won't tell you TOO much about the
game, that's half the fun of Rail Road Tycoon, finding out
new things as you play. I've just given you the basics.
Also, in this zip I have included a save game to help start
you out if you need extra help, just copy it to your Rail
Road Tycoon directory and select LOAD GAME from the startup
menu. Ok, well enjoy the game, and do your self a favor,
DON'T GET THE CHEAT...there is one out there, but this game
is destine to become a classic, don't spoil it for your self
just yet.

Railroad Tycoon Deluxe Reviews
Summary: Player builds and runs a railroad. That's it, really. There are several different maps to play on such as Europe, North and South America, and Southern Africa. I played the original version a lot. The main improvements in this version are some extra maps and you can build more stations. At the time of release the program was a disappointment due to slow running and bugs. The copy here runs well for me and does not slow down.
This game should be of interest to people who like management games. I haven't tried it on the hardest level yet but the computer players don't seem to be a major threat. Most of my enjoyment comes from making improvements to my lines and increasing profits. While considered by some to be a real 'gamer's game' I don't find it overly complex. On the contrary, the interface is pretty good. The only thing I've had to look up online really was how to lay track (Shift+direction key). There doesn't seem to be a good FAQ floating around out there (there is one but it appears to be the notes to a fuller treatment and often refers you to the manual) but there are a couple of sites offering strategy tips. The manual is available at Home of the Underdogs.
One of the best things about RRT and RRTD is that unlike most strategy games the fun isn't just in the early parts of the game. As time goes on you will still have plenty of room to expand and plenty of upgrades to make. In other words, unlike Civilization and Europa Universalis, for instance, it doesn't cause late game tedium.
In addition to operations, there's a financial element when you call up your broker. You can borrow and repay money, buy treasury stock to prevent takeovers, and buy rival railroad stocks in an attempt to takeover or just screw with them.
Competition also comes into play when you and a rival run lines into the same station. This causes a rate war and if you aren't well entrenched you could well lose it. I also try to cut off the computer player from good cities by building track around the markets.
I know that a lot of players get mad when the computer 'cheats'. I don't, but I understand that others do. The AI obviously plays by different rules than the player in this game and can lay what would be for the player illegal track configurations. Another possible concern is the lack of multi-player.
A nice bonus to the game are the optional headlines that pop up reporting major events such as the beginning and end of wars or the assassination of leaders. As the game will appeal to history buffs in particular, this is a nice extra. I've only played on the North American map so far and the headlines are awfully Americentric: I've only noticed one Canadian headline and no Mexican headlines.
My biggest criticism is that the game allows you to do quite well just running passengers and mail in simple configurations. Sure, you can make nice profits on short runs from resource heavy areas to cities but you don't have to if you can't be bothered.
A lesser complaint is that there are a lot of random events, which, again, annoy some gamers more than others. I personally feel that they increase realism, but I admit I'm about ready to start running the game in 'no collision' mode because I'm tired of rushing to (try and) save a train headed for a washed out bridge.
Overall, I consider Railroad Tycoon Deluxe to be a grand little game of modest size and small demands on your computer. I haven't played Railroad Tycoon II or 1830 as yet, but most of the (admittedly few) reviews that compare those games to RRTD I've read rate RRTD the better game despite its age. I'm not particularly interested in railroads, but this is a good game for anyone interested in railroads, business, history or strategy games in general.
(Note on ratings: No, it doesn't deserve an 8 for graphics because the graphics aren't good even by 1993 standards and I have no idea what it sounds like. I just wanted to give it a 9 overall.)
I recently have spent alot of time playing this old game. I can't really say if it is better than the original RRT, but I cannot imagine playing the original, as the deluxe version is basic enough for my needs.
It took me awhile to figure out the basics of this game without a manual, and I haven't even started touching on the economic dynamics. Like most games by Sid Myer (the creator of Civilization), RRT starts as a basic and playable game, but turns into a complicated dynamic, and almost living entity.
Playing a railroad tycoon may not be for every sim game player, and if you're looking for something more general, try Transport Tycoon. The basic premise is to build rail links between cities and provide commerce for specific industrial and economic needs, as well as transport people around.
The graphics are good for a game of this age, though the interface seems to flake out. This might be the result of playing such an old game on newer hardware. If you can stand the campy western MIDI soundtrack, then the music is good. Newer sound cards might have occasional problems with the digitized effects. Mine went into what sounded like a feedback loop once, but turning the sound on and off seemed to fix it.
Game play is straightforward IF you have the manual, without it, you'll be missing some importing clues as to the usability of the game. In particular, there are some important details on how to branch and double tracks that is extremely useful. The manual also helps to clarify why certain items are needed, and how to interpret certain screens of data. This would be essential later on in the game as the economy of the game changes significantly.
There are some flaws in this game. The most obvious and important one I noted, was that the computer is able to build track systems that are literally impossible for the player. There are some limitations in the total number of stations and other problems with the game that were never corrected by the developer, but the game is still quite playable.

Ahhhh This is what I call a great game! This week end, I've played Railroad Tycoon II in my sister's place, and we remembered sadly how the original one kept us playing four days and night in the early 90's. I've played the CGA version with PC speaker sound, but believe me that still was great.
We could recognize trains from sight thanks to really nie graphics. But stop babling, on with the game.
In this game you have in, charge to manage a railroad company. You build stations, lay tracs, buy trains, choose which goods go to which town (according to what people offer and what they ask). For exemple, you send grain to a station near a farm. Then you take livestock to send them in a town to be butchered and then in another one one to be eaten. The more distant the town are, the more you earn.
And there's also bonuses, where you're asked to realise a task in a given time. It can be being the first to join a town, deliver a special wagon of goods in a specific location, etc. And the computer AI try to beat you to win the bonuses too.
And there comes the talking about the AI. It was great and challenging at high levels. It was reactive as I remember. But I was young at this time :)
The harder part of the game may be the economic part, with the buying and selling of company shares (you ca, earn money on what your opponent make :p)
I think that's what there is to say. Have fun with this game! I think I'll always do (and by the way, RR2 is still good too!)
Railroad tycoon on unelma peli niille jotka lapsena halusivat junankuljettaja. Railroad strategia peli, jossa luodaan juna verkosto.
Hiiri ohjaus toimii mukavasti. Rail road tycoon on oiva valinta strategia pelien ystäville. suosittelen lämpimästi
Railroad tycoon. In this game Sid Meier, the master, proves once again that it is not the graphics the sound or the 3d animation that makes a game (indeed I have played many games with an abundance of all 3 that were crap) but the CONCEPT (did you hear me 3d realms?). In this superb must have classic of a game Sid Meier once again proves himself as the founding father of ALL our favourite pioneering and profiteering games.
You play one of up to four companies competeing in a variety of locations for monolpoly of the railroad, by conecting cities and industries, investing in stock building your own industries and moving materials, we see that you can compete in this game by any number of stratergies. With technological upgrades to the steam engines over time and upgrading your stations you can improves your profits or maybe bankrupt yourself. don't let the graphics fool you - this game was the inspiration for any number of other best sellers including the much loved transport tycoon. Ah, its good to be back in the drivers seat with the smell of burnt wood and soot in the air the wind in your hair and two thousand tons of steel racing you along the tracks.
if you liked this game try: transport tycoon, port of call, colonisation
Reviewed By
