Super Solvers: Gizmos & Gadgets Reviews
I dug this one up after a few discussions in my high school physics class. It's still fun after all these years.
Premise of the game: you are one of the Super Solvers, in the classic blue suit, and your archrival Morty has decided to take over the local technology center. You have to prove that you're a better scientist than he is by solving puzzles and building better racing vehicles than he does.
Gameplay: The game is extremely well-designed. It draws in the player with a series of puzzles of increasing difficulty in a number of areas of physical and mechanical science, including forms of energy, electric circuits, magnetism, force, work, and gears. Solving puzzles allows the player to pick up crates full of parts; the player's goal is to build the best possible vehicle by finding the best parts in the crates.
Gameplay gets a 10 from me because it manages to do a lot with a little - it reinforces a lot of scientific concepts, and younger players learn not only about how to solve the puzzles but about the vehicles they're building. The Learning Company was right on.
Graphics: Super VGA graphics are quite nice. The game looks terrific, especially compared to a lot of older Super Solver games. 7 out of 10 just because there's been better.
Sound: I couldn't get the game to recognize my high-end SoundBlaster card, so I was forced to deal with the chirping of the PC speaker. Of course, the game is fine with the sound off (which is what I eventually did).
Other notes: Game control can feel a little choppy and frustrating at times. People with faster machines will need a utility like Turbo to emulate a slower processor. The game may require you to use the switch '-gv' when running the program lest it fail to recognize the VGA compatibility of your graphics card.
Overall: 10 out of 10. Gameplay is everything.
An awesome learning game, that is geared (excuse the pun) toward the realm of basic science and mecanics. The Master of Mischief, along with his mechanical henchmen, has taken over the Shady Glenn Science Institue, even though he has no real knowledge of science. And, as a "Super Solver" crime stopper, it's your job to prove that you make a better Head Scientist then he is by building all kinds of vehicles, then racing them against his creations.
This was DEFFINITELY a fun game! My brother and I played this to death when we first got it. I still blow the dust off of it and play it ocassionally, too! It's just that fun!
For its time, the graphics are splended, especially for a learning game. The sounds do an excellent job of sounding wacky and interesting, which is crucial, considering this game is made for kids 14 and under.
Even though this game was made for young kids and pre-teens, it can still be fun for people all the way up to 21! It provides hours of entertainment, and the puzzles inside teach the kids all about basic science concepts, such as magnetics, electricity, gears & axles, and basic chemistry.
If you're looking for a game that can get kids involved with learning basic science, then look no further! It's fun, creative, and educationaly all in one. Who knows...maybe you'll find YOURSELF addicted to it, just like me! :)
