Place your aircraft in a forward slip by applying full rudder in either direction and using the aileron in the opposite direction to keep flying forward in a constant heading. Enemy aircraft that are in front of your plane will not shoot.
Red Baron Reviews
The game play of Red Baron is pretty much what you would expect to find in a flight simulator with plenty of enemies and objects to shoot. I’m really not sure what the storyline is about, because the cabinet came with little or no instructions. For the most part, you spend your time roving through the air just looking to set your sights on something that is worth shooting. You’ll come across targets like pillboxes, pyramids and other planes in the air, all of which give you a point bonus for shooting them down.
The hardest part of playing the game in all honesty, is knowing just what you can shoot and where to go. Because of the extreme age of the machine, I had a hard time just trying to figure out what direction I was going in. Anyone who gets a chance to play this will probably find the same troubles, because with the vector visuals that you have, it’s hard to tell just what it is that you’re shooting at and what direction that you’re going in.
Control really isn’t much of an issue, simply because you have a little joystick that allows you to point the front of your plane in a direction and fly to it. You’ll find that the firing of the game is done with a simple button press and that enemies really don’t have much advanced skills, so you won’t be dog fighting too hard with the computer. Advanced moves and high-flying tricks aren’t needed here, so anyone of any skill level should be able to pick the game up and simply play with it!
The visuals that you find here are simple with the vector style graphics monitor. Basically what you’re looking at is a black and white screen where the images pop up in different areas and you can shoot at them. A targeting sight is there, but it doesn’t do much to help you figure out just where you’re aiming. Backgrounds are kept simple, though the scrolling part of the game lets you imagine that you’re actually moving your plane with the direction of the landscape! All in all, simple yet effective, thought you might be aching for some serious explosions and otherwise after an hour of play.
There is a simple track that accompanies you throughout Red Baron, and you’ll find that the only difference that you have in the track is when you score a long ranged hit. A tune plays for a moment when you successfully score one, so you’ll find that this little addition makes the game fun in bits and pieces. The sound effects of the game are simple and quiet, with a soft purr of the plane and some cool minimal effects like the dip of the plane. However, these are limited and you’ll find that the game doesn’t keep up and you’ll be left with very little to listen to!
Red Baron is a great attempt at a flight simulation game that is over twenty years old. Created in the old style of vector graphics and with plenty of challenge that keeps raising with each passing stage, you’ll find plenty to do in this ancient game. However, with the lack of enemies and different landscapes as well as the limitations that this game has, you’ll find that there is nothing here that will keep you interested if you’re into the flashy effects and mission based gameplay. :)
Red Baron places you as a pilot for either the British and French forces, or for the German Air Force, starting out just as the airplane is becoming useful as a combat tool. The object is, of course, to shoot down enemy planes, and to survive the war as (hopefully) the highest scoring ace on either side.
Graphics in Red Baron are particularly good, considering its age. It makes full use of VGA, and the static scenes such as maps and background are beautifully done. In-flight graphics are necessarily a bit less, but are more than adequate, and were simple enough to allow for reasonable smoothness. A particularly neat feature was the ability to "paint" your personal aircraft.
If there could be said to be a low point to the game, it would have to be the sound. Although the sounds are adequate, there's nothing spectacular. In-flight sounds such as engine noise and gunfire are acceptable, if not exactly life-like.
The gameplay is what makes Red Baron. The way you'll want to play the game is in "career" mode, as I mentioned above, where you start out as a fighter pilot for one of the two conflicting sides. Technological developments occur according to the correct historical timeline, so you start out flying small, slow monoplane fighters. As you progress into 1916 and beyond, better aircraft become slowly available, and you can trade your current planes for better ones.
Actual flight is extremely well-done. The computer pilots display widely varying levels of skill - flying in a confrontation with Manfred von Richtofen is quite different than jumping a group of scout planes, and the flight model permits many different maneuvers that were developed in this war - Immelman turns, loops, and the like. Added bits of realism such as damage to your plane resulting in loss of fuel or loss of oil pressure are a nice touch, as well as the potential for your machine guns to jam, or for you yourself to be wounded.
As you progress through your career and shoot down more planes, you gain promotions, and can be awarded medals, based on your performance. Become famous enough, and you may be offered command of elite squadrons, or receive personal challenges from aces on the other side of the conflict. If you are unlucky enough to be shot down and crash, you may end up either dead, or a prisoner. If the latter happens, you still have a chance to escape and fly again before the end of the war. Hopefully, however, you make it alive and unhurt to the end of the war, and when that happens, you get a nice review of your career.
Red Baron was an excellent flight sim for its time, taking full advantage of the limited graphics capabilities of machines of that day.
Ici, on retrouve l'esprit simulation.
Note coup de coeur : 9/10
Jo Red Baron - kdo by neuronil slzu dojeti a nostalgie. pred neuveritelnymi 13(!!) lety vysel tenhle legendarni simulator s nemene legendarnim jmenem. Je velmi obtizne jej dnes recenzovat, o to jsem u sestrelovani archaickych dvou ci vice plosniku stravil dosti dnu a bezesnych noci, take pocet mych slavnych umrti( vesmes pohreb zehem ) byl uctyhodny. Hra je velmi stara , ale jiz pred 13(!!) lety se vyznacovala necim, co povazuji za nejvetsi klad pocitacove hry vubec - neuveritelnou hratelnosti. tim take na dlouho odzbrojila vsechny sve konkurenty( napr Dawnpatrol, Dogfight apod). ty nemeli sanci ji prebit v hitparade poc. her.( prekonali ji az hry jako napr. Flying Circus ).
O jogo, que foi lançado em 1990, é o precursor dos jogos, “Aces of The Pacific”, de 1992, “Aces over Europe”, 1993 e “Aces of The Deep”, 1994.
----------------------
O enredo:
The Red Baron is an undisputed landmark in flight simulators, just like the person it is named after is a undisputed idol among pilots. For it's time, it had great graphics, great sound, a fantastic campaign. all in all, an absorbing game, as has been seen ny the number of utilities and tools it triggered off.
The Premise:
You are a pilot in the Great War (1914-1918), a time when biplanes and triplanes ruled the sky, and the average lifetime for a fighter (or scout, as they were then called) pilot was counted in weeks, if not days (It was once said that if an engineer had wanted to design something which would burn very fast, very efficiently, he would take a lot of cloth and wood, coat the entire thing with an inflamable varnish or 'dope', put a lot of unprotected petrol in the middle, close to a piece of hot metal(the engine). this is a WW1 plane. You can only fly single seat fighters, but you can fly for the British, the French, the Americans, or the Germans.
The single missions:
An overview of the various typical missions a scout pilot would have had to carry out. You can fly for either side, and you can set things such as the skill of the enemy, his position, the weather, and so on. If you want to fly for the Allies, you can even shoot down a 'Zeppelin' (a massive gasbag, loaded with bombs. a sitting duck, but one with a sting in it's tail). There are even a number of historic missions.
The Campaign:
This the the most interesting part of the game. You select your side, and the year you start flying [If you start at the beginning (1915) then you can (if you are good, lucky, or a cheat) fly through the whole war]. Then you are assigned to a squadron and thrown in at the deep end. if you fly well, you can get promoted (11 victories) in which case you are allowed, every three months to ask for a change of squadron, and then promoted again (21 victories) to choose your own personal aircraft regardless of whatv the squadron is assigned. You will keep getting decorated. If you get shot down in enemy territory, you will be takien prisoner, and maybe allowed to escape. Meanwhile, the war rolls on, new planes will be inducted into service, prominent aces will challenge you to single combat (and cheat. Manfred von Richtofen, that epitome of all that is honourable, will get a couple of people to help him out) and if you are very good, you will make it to the headlines. When the war is over, if you are still alive, you end up kissing your wife again.
The Realism:
For every mission you are allowed to set how authentic your flight model is. It can range from indestructable, to realistic (unflyable, unless you have practice). you can decide whether your guns will jam, whether you will blackout, and a whole bunch of other things. Your difficulty factor, which is decided by your choices, will determine how many points you score om a mission. The only things that the points decide is your position in the hall of fame.
Overall:
A great game. Even if you have much better games, get this on, and you will be hooked. If you can mange it, get the Mission Builder Addon
'Red Baron' may very well be one of the greatest air combat games ever made. The fact that even though it was made in 1990 yet I still enjoy playing it, proves that it is indeed a solid, well-made game. Much of the games success comes from its career mode in which you can enlist for either the allies or Germans and perform missions throughout the war. There is an incredible amount of detail and accuracy in this game. The airplanes are historically accurate not to mention unique (i.e. each one has its strengths and weaknesses). You must also take into account the mission options such as number of planes, formation, ammuntion type, etc. In addition, 'Red Baron' has a gret variety of simulation options which range from having your carburator freeze, to sun spot blindness. Furthermore, there is a difference in the missions you play. Mission types include hunting for a zeppeling (large airship), patrolling airspace, escorting bombers, escorting recoinasance units, destroying observation balloons, defending observation balloons, stopping bomber raids, and dogfights. Depending on the outcome of the mission, you will be granted a certain number of points. Whats best is that eventually, you will begin earning medals (Victoria cross, Iron cross, etc.) and rank promotions. If you really start getting good, rival aces will challenge you to a duel!! You may even figh the Red Baron himself! Speaking of the Red Baron, this game also holds a special section dedicated to showing the special planes of the famous pilots of the first world war. You could even fly historical missions and see whether or not history can be changed!! All in all, 'Red Baron' is perhaps one of the greatest combat games ever made...two thumbs up!
Reviewed By
I first played this game in 1991 and it's been a staple ever since (along with Knights of the Sky). But times have changed; the graphics and sound capabilities of computers have improved and games like Rowan's Flying Corps have left the poor old Red Baron looking quite sad and dated...
And yet this remains one of my favourite games. The career facility is quite fantastic and, while it may lack the sense that you're caught up in the flow of history, it doesn't have the 'canned' feeling that you're just going through the motions (not something I can say about the far prettier career options for Flying Corps!). I'd go so far as to say that the Red Baron's pilot career system ought to be a model for other games - it's a genuine pleasure to create a pilot, guide him through his first victories in primitive machines, watching him earn medals, promotion and invitations from your country's foremost aces to join their squadrons.
As to gameplay, before I say anything, one must understand that Red Baron is a product of its time. There are many aspects of the game which attract and deserve criticism but it must always be borne in mind that this game is more than a decade old and some of the criticism levelled at Red Baron may, in the end, be unwarranted.
With that caveat in mind, it's irritating that, when flying escort missions, your recce planes will tend to fly brainlessly in a straight line so that, after you've dealt with enemy attackers, you have to hunt around desperately for the gimps you're meant to be protecting! It's not very much fun that enemy attack patterns are so predictable - always 1-4 enemy planes and always at least two attacks during any 'Patrol The Front' mission.
The graphics are primitive but I don't think it's fair to harp on that - after all, if you want something flashy, why are you playing a game as old as this? The actual flight model is quite excellent. When you upgrade from the German Eindekker to an Albatross, you can feel the difference in the way your plane responds. Playing on the Allied side, I found the difference between plane types to be even more pronounced. To achieve this noticeable different in the handling of the different machines is, in my humble opinion, no small feat, especially given the game's age.
Similarly, the flying technique of pilots in the game (both enemy fliers and your own wingmen) varies radically with their experience. The enemy aces each have their own peculiar mannerisms; thus, facing Immelmann is a whole different ballgame from facing a bog-standard Gerry monoplane and, unlike so many other games, the computer doesn't 'cheat' by making enemy aces do impossible things or allowing them to take extra damage. No, sir, in Red Baron, the enemy's aces are just excellent pilots so that you get a real sense of achievement when you win. I hope it doesn't make me sound too pitiful if I admit that, during a duel with Immelman, I was genuinely saddened when I 'accidentally' shot him down too soon (fired a spray of bullets randomly in his direction and, through blind luck, caused the poor devil's plan to explode).
(Tip of the Day: if you're playing as a British flier, always try to shoot down that fat Nazi Goering! Remember: if you get him in 1918, he won't be around to blitz London in 1940!).
For its time, Red Baron is the best flight simulator I have ever played. The game takes you back to WWI where you can join either the Germans or the British & French. Once you take sides, you go through the war as a combat piolet.
There is no campaign and no real goal to accomplish other than be persistant and keep shooting down enemy planes, balloons, and zeplings. There are a myridad of different missions that you are asked to do: dogfight, defend reconosence planes, intercept enemy planes, defend you airfield, attack the enemy balllons, and take out an infamous zepling. And once you begin to get a bit of perstige, you may be challanged be an enemy flying ace for a one on one duel.
The game has a variey of realism and difficulty levels so any novice can fly, if you are a frequent of these games then you will not find Red Baron too dificult and maybe even a little too easy.
The best part of the game is gaining rank, perstiege, honors, and eventually your own plane. These things come with the devestation of the enemy. The worst thing about the game, as with any old game, is the graphics. Each pixel can be counted, this has, however, not bothered be as much with this game as with others. My problem was distinguishing my own planes from the enemy: you cannot see it well and I frequently shoot my allies by mistake (which you can be court marsheled for!) The sound is not too great either but these do not take away from the overall game play.
If you are looking for a classic flight simulator, like having a career, and do not mind old graphics, this is the game.
One of the greatest simulator games ever made. And some three years before anything even slightly comparable to playability and graphics. From the same maker than Aces over Europe (which also is one of my favourites).
(Campaing) game starts with you choosing your country, year and rank. Countries are USA, England and Germany, years from 1914 to 1918 and ranks from ensing to captain (rittmeister) if I remember correctly. It has been a while since I last actually played this...
After choosing your starting base and plane, you'll be taken to missions which vary from dogfights to escorting bombers and blowing up zeppelins. There's also the chance of being challenged by rival ace to a dogfight. In fact there's about 3 challenges in every campaing, starting from not so good aces alone to Manfred von Richthofen (the Red Baron) with 3 or 4 escorters. If you fly for allies that is.
Unlike Aces ove Europe, there are no ground targets for you to shoot, but that's just realism. Another (annoyingly) realistic thing in the game is the fact, that german planes are superior to their allied opponents in every aspect during the first years of the war.
Altogether extremely enjoyable game worth downloading by anyone interested in simulators.
A VOLAR!
